The Fitness Alberta Foundations in Physical Activity and Exercise course covers basic fitness principles such as anatomy, physiology, movement mechanics, training and conditioning, risk management and leadership. This 24-hour course is a prerequisite to all other Fitness Alberta® certification courses. All Fitness Alberta courses are taught by qualified and certified Fitness Alberta® Trainer-educators.

NOTE: Course listings are updated continually, and posted as soon as they are approved.

The in-person course is offered at approved agencies, by qualified trainer-educators. Course location, dates and times are scheduled according to the instructor's and facility's space availability.

In-person learning is a great fit for candidates who are energized by other learners and who like to share ideas and knowledge.

What to expect in this course

Foundations in Physical Activity lays the foundation for the rest of your certification journey. Most candidates require independent study before writing the Foundations theory exam. To help you prepare:

  • Your course trainer-educators and facilitators are there to support your journey and will provide learning activities to guide your understanding of the course content.
  • The learning objectives in each chapter indicate the knowledge you are expected to retain and apply. These are an excellent study tool during and post course.
  • The performance standards are also helpful for you to understand the knowledge and competencies you will be required to demonstrate, either through practical assessment or written exam to earn certification.
