Requirements and application process

Fitness Alberta is looking for exceptional leadership and facilitation skills to join our team of highly qualified Trainer-educators and Assistant Trainer-educators.  Fitness Alberta educators are among Alberta's most highly qualified, respected exercise professionals. Do you have the qualifications to join our team? 

Apply for our four day trainer-educator/assistant trainer-educator course and take your career to the next level. Mentor new certification candidates, and offer Fitness Alberta certification and professional development courses to our community of more than 2,000 certified fitness professionals.

To apply you must have held current Fitness Alberta (AFLCA) certification for a minimum of 2 years. Include the following in your application:

  • A one page letter of intent, identifying the benefits you bring to Fitness Alberta

  • A copy of your Fitness Alberta (AFLCA) certificate and specializations (must have current Fitness Alberta (AFLCA) certification for a minimum of 2 years)

  • Resumé indicating professional fitness leadership experience including: Fitness Alberta (AFLCA) training events, continuing education credits, workshops attended, and specific areas of concentration, courses and workshops facilitated or undertaken

  • University or College transcripts showing completion of degree or diploma and course work in:

    • Anatomy

    • Physiology

    • Biomechanics

    • Exercise Physiology

    • Standard First Aid and/or Athletic Injuries Care and Prevention Course

  • OPTIONAL: Letter of support from a currently certified Fitness Alberta (AFLCA) Trainer-educator emphasizing exceptional leadership skills relevant to being a trainer-educator. (The referee must have seen a minimum of one of your classes to comment on the candidate’s leadership skills and/or adult education facilitation skills)

  • Video* (25 minutes) of you leading an exercise class demonstrating your cuing, technical expertise, and leadership abilities 

  • Video* (maximum 15 minutes) demonstrating your leadership and facilitation skills in an adult education/facilitation (e.g. classroom) situation.

  • *Upload your videos to YouTube and send a direct link by email or include the link with your application.

All applications are reviewed by our selection committee. Acceptance is not guaranteed, and incomplete packages will not be reviewed.

Trainer Scope of Practice

  • Facilitation of all Fitness Alberta courses Trainer-educator certification is held in.

  • Conduct practical assessments for Fitness Alberta leaders in areas Trainer-educator certification is held in.

  • Act as ambassadors/representatives of Fitness Alberta 

  • Follow Fitness Leadership Canada Performance Standards, Fitness Alberta standards, and the Fitness Alberta Code of Conduct.

Note: Trainers co-facilitating courses with assistant trainers are responsible for the course and must ensure that all course material is covered.
