Foundations in physical activity and exercise course

We are currently updating our certification process and courses. Please check back in late July for new course dates online and in person. Thank you for your patience.

The Fitness Alberta Foundations in physical activity and exercise course (formerly exercise theory course) covers basic fitness principles such as anatomy, physiology, movement mechanics, training and conditioning, nutrition and leadership. Foundations in physical activity and exercise is a 24-hour course and prerequisite to all other Fitness Alberta® certification courses. All Foundations in physical activity and exercise are taught by qualified and certified Fitness Alberta® Trainer-educators.

We offer this course through distance education and in-person.

Distance course

The distance course is asynchronous and designed to allow participants to work through independent study over a 12-week period. Non-graded assignments are provided throughout the course to support your work through the material. Feedback is provided to all participants and individual consultation with students is available by request. The instructor is also available for scheduled office time one hour a week.

In-person course

The in-person course is offered at approved agencies across Alberta. Course dates and times are scheduled according to the instructor's and facility's space availability.
