The CPFT scope of practice ensures that the services you provide match the skills and knowledge within your training. 

CPFT Scope of Practice

The FAB Certified Personal Fitness Trainer is able to:

1. Administer applicable, appropriate pre-participation health screening using evidence-based tools (e.g., PAR-Q+, BMI, height, weight, RHR, predictive VO2 max) for apparently healthy individuals and those cleared for unrestricted physical activity

2. Conduct counselling and motivational interviewing session(s) to gather client history/experience around physical activity, fitness and lifestyle for apparently healthy individuals and those cleared for unrestricted physical activity.

3. Provide safe, effective individualized exercise and physical activity programs based on Fitness Alberta standards and FLC guidelines. Programs use the World Health Organization’s Global Recommendations on Physical Activity for Health as a benchmark for physical activity recommendations.

4. Monitor, document, progress and/or modify exercise and physical activity sessions using the principles of conditioning to ensure the safety and well-being of apparently healthy individuals and those cleared for unrestricted physical activity.

5. Provide basic nutritional information based on the current edition of the Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating

6. Ensure safe environments for all exercise and physical activity sessions.

7. Provide weight room monitoring and equipment orientation.
