Online personal training course FAQs


How does the course work? 

Once you register for the course, you will be sent two emails: 

  1. Fitness Alberta will contact you with a link to the CPFT resource manual, containing learning outcomes and supplementary information for Canadian personal trainers 
  2.  The course host, the National Council for Strength and Fitness will email you with log in information to access the e-Learning platform. 
  • Upon logging in to the course you will have access to the e-learning platform, e-textbook and complete instructor support.

How long do I have access to the course?

  • You have access to the course for one year.
  • Please note, that you must also complete your certification requirements (exam and practical assessment) within one year of registering for the course.  

How long does it take to complete the course? 

  • We estimate study time to be from 80-120 hours. How long it takes to complete varies with each candidate and if you are able to commit to part time or full time study. On average, coursework can take around 6 months to complete, however this timeline could be shorter for full time coursework.

What will I learn in the course? 

This is a post-secondary level course that consists of 8 units covering the following topics: 

  • Musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology
  • Human physiology (cardio-respiratory, muscle and metabolic)
  • Pre-exercise screening and resting health assessments
  • Resistance training principles and exercise techniques
  • Cardiovascular training concepts and exercise techniques
  • Flexibility training concepts and exercise techniques (dynamic, static, PNF, SMR)
  • Planning fitness training programs
  • Communication, consultation and motivation techniques

Do I need prior education to take the course?

  • No, you do not need any prior education to take the course; familiarity with the fitness industry will help in learning, but the course is designed for anyone to take.

Can I work alone on the course?

  • Yes, the course is self-paced, so you do not have a learning cohort to work with and would work on your own time and schedule to complete the materials.

Do I need CPR? 

  • You do not need CPR to take the course, however, CPR-level 1 first aid is required for your certification, and must be current for your recertification. 

Do I have to complete the chapter quizzes and final practice exam?

  • Yes, you are required to pass each quiz and final practice exam to complete the course. Quizzes and exams can be taken as many time as you like to aid in your learning.

Do my chapter quiz scores count toward my certification exam grade?

  • No. The quiz marks help you to gauge your comprehension of the material, and to prepare you for the certification exam. 

Can I take a chapter quiz more than once?

  • Yes. We recommend that you take the chapter quizzes as many times as you feel necessary to fully retain understand the content.

What happens if I don't complete my certification requirements in one year? 

  • Missing the deadline for certification will result in additional fees for extension.
